U12A Tornadoes Go 2 & 2 In Whitby

Jan. 23, 2023

Timmins U12A participated in the Whitby tournament this past weekend.

The first game the girls went up against Whitby U12A.  We started off strong with a goal 1 minute and 15 seconds into game scored unassisted by Olivia Robertson.  Piper Dzjacky was quick to follow her up with her own unassisted goal 2 minutes later.  Scotia Arthur scored 5 minutes into the period.  The girls kept the pressure up and Brianna Rathbone scored her own unassisted goal 7 minutes into the game.  Whitby was able to come back and score, then Brianna Rathbone scored the last goal of the first period with 2 minutes left.  Our girls kept strong pressure on the Whitby team with Scotia Arthur scoring twice back to back 5 minutes into the second.   Olivia Robertson followed those up with a goal assisted by Olivia Symes and Olivia Young.   Olivia Robertson scored the last goal of the game assisted by Olivia Young and Leighla Belair with 4 seconds left in the game.  Final score 9-1 for Timmins, goalie Hailey Johnson was on fire, it was a great start to the tournament.

Second game was against Richmond Hill,  Leighla Belair started us off with the first goal 1 minute, 15 seconds into the game.  She was assisted by Olivia Young and Olivia Robertson.  Second goal was scored by Olivia Vandal, assisted by Piper Dzjacky and Brianna Rathbone.  Ayla Lamothe gave us our next goal at 8 minutes in, she was assisted by Scotia Arthur and Spencer Malette.  Richmond Hill was able to break through goalie Hailey Johnson and score at with 6 minutes left in the first.   The girls on both sides were able to keep everyone away from their nets until Scotia Arthur finished off the first with an unassisted goal with 1 minute left.  Richmond Hill scored first in the second period.  Timmins followed it with a goal from Olivia Vandal, assisted by Olivia Young.  Richmond answered with 6 minutes left.  Scotia Arthur scored unassisted right after and then she scored the last goal in the game assisted by Olivia Symes and Spencer Malette.  Final score was 8-3 Timmins.

Third game was against our Northern rivals Sault Ste Marie.  Our girls kept good pressure, but the Sault were able to get two goals past goalie Hailey Johnson in the first period.  Scotia Arthur scored Timmins only goal in the first with 4 minutes left to play.  The Sault came out strong in the second scoring 3 goals in the first half.  Ayla Lamothe was able to give our girls a boost with an unassisted goal 10 minutes in. The Sault were able to get past our girls twice more and Brianna Rathbone scored the last goal in the game assisted by Olivia Vandal and Eriana Everard with 2 minutes left.  It was a tough game, but the girls really worked hard.  Final score was 7-3 for the Sault.

Fourth game was against Metcalfe-Kelly.  We knew going in this was a strong team and would be difficult to beat.  Metcalfe came out swinging, scoring three goals early in the first in quick succession.  Goalie Hailey Johnson suffered a knee injury on one of them and had to come off the ice 5 minutes into the game.  Affiliate goalie, 8-year-old Julia Robertson stepped up to cover her.  This was her first time playing in an A tournament game. Our girls did their best to protect our young goalie.  Julia did well for her first appearance and was able to stop 7 of 11 attempts by Metcalfe.  Hailie was able to return late in the second period, but Metcalf was very determined and were able to get two more goals past us.  Final score was 9-0 Metcalfe.

The U12 Timmins Tornadoes did a great job at this tournament and the coaching staff is all very proud of them and the progression so far this season.  We can’t wait to see what they can do at the next tournament
