Timmins Tornadoes Golden in Gloucester
Timmins Ringette Association sent three teams to participate in the 35th Annual Gloucester-Cumberland Ringette Association invitational tournament this weekend. The Timmins Tornadoes Petite “B” (U12) team dominated their division, winning all three games in regular play, and then beating Pointe Claire 6-1 for the gold medal. The team’s defense was superb, with Veronic Delage, Nadia Dagenais, Janelle Robichaud and Maia Kvas keeping shots on net to a minimum. Goalies Sarah Zuidema and Veronique Gagne shared an impressive goals against average of a slim 1 goal per game. The Timmins girls topped the leader board for their division, having the top seven points-getters for the tournament. Tara Jensen led the squad with 11 points, followed by team mates Deanna Vien, Alexa Beland, Jordan Thiboutot, Nina Pittui, Tara Griener and Thea Wucher.

The hard work of the Tornadoes Tween “A”(U14) team also paid off this weekend. The team came into this tournament winless, and skated away with the gold medal. During regular play, the girls won two games, tied one, and lost one, giving them enough points to play in the medal game. Goalie Pat Viel was phenomenal throughout the tournament. Kelsie Iserhoff, Emily Jensen and Chelsie Longstreet tied for second place on their division’s leader board with 8 points each. Sarah Bellemare, Sydney Lia, Danielle Roy, Emma Morandin, Britney Bujold and Jenna Dubeau also tallied points for the cause. Defensively, Cassandra Bourgeois, Melanie Malette and Bianca Robichaud were on top of their game.

The Tornadoes Junior “A”s played 4 teams from across the country, including teams from Nova Scotia, Alberta, Quebec and Ontario. They won their first two games convincingly, but then lost their last two games by a heartbreaking one point each. Janelle Blanchette led the team with 9 points, followed closely by Caitlyn Ranger with 7. Goalie Hannah Mahaffy had an impressive 1.75 goals against average.
All three teams exhibited exceptional sportsmanship throughout the tournament, proudly representing their hometown of Timmins. Congratulations!
