Timmins Tornadoes roared into Guelph for the February 9-11 Guelph Ringette Tournament with teams in the U14A, U16A and U19A divisions and the U16A team came home with GOLD !!!
In the U16A division the Tornadoes went 4-0 during the round robin with wins over Cambridge, Guelph, Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury giving them the #1 seeding for the playoff round. In the semi-final Timmins topped Ajax by a score of 6-3 earning them the right to meet up with Forrest in the championship game. Forrest opened the scoring at 9:04 of the first period and two minutes later Magalie Durepos-Létourneau tied things up and they stayed that way until Kara D’Arcangelo sealed the deal scoring the Gold Medal winning goal at 12:14 of the second period.
It was tough sledding for the U14A Tornadoes as they went 2 and 2 in the round robin with four 1-goal games. They opened with wins against Elora-Fergus and Mississauga then killer losses to West Ferris and Burlington, ending round robin play in a 3-way tie for 4th place. After the tie breakers were applied they were seeded 5th and did not advance to the final rounds.
The U19A division was a tough place to be at this tournament with both Mitchell and West Ferris going undefeated in the round robin. Our Timmins Tornadoes advanced to the playoff round in 3rd place by virtue of 3 wins and a tie in the round robin. Timmins faced West Ferris in the first semi-final while Mitchell went up against Nova Scotia in the other. After trading a pair of goals, West Ferris took a 3-2 lead with only 6 seconds left in the first period. Timmins tied it up with 12:08 left in the 2nd then took the lead a minute and a half later. West Ferris tied things up on the power play with 2:11 left in the second, then with 1:19 left they put another one in and hung on to win the game 5-4. West Ferris went on capture U19A gold with a 4-3 win over Mitchell.
